Alley Cat
Yosuke Kubozuka plays a despondent ex-boxer who is self-medicating for the injuries that ruined his career. He meets a stray cat who brightens his day, but she is taken up by a funny, grungy mechanic. Yosuke Kubozuka also plays a grungy mechanic (Kenji Furuya). The strange couple, who refer to one other by the dueling names they given the cat, Maru and Lily, are suddenly drawn into a political scheme with Saeko (Yui Ichikawa) and her kid at the core of the plot. After being witnesses to yet another instance of the powerful taking advantage of the powerless, the two homeless individuals decided to embark on a journey for redemption, or at the very least, the peaceful ownership of cats. (Interesting fact: Yosuke Kubozuka and Kenji "KJ" Furuya, who appeared in the film Alley Cat together, also collaborated in 2017 on the release of the single "Soul Ship." In the band Dragon Ash, Kubozuka plays under the monikers Manji Line and Furuya.) - JAPAN CUTS: The Festival of New Japanese Film
