Black Is … Black Ain’t
Marlon Riggs, an African-American documentary filmmaker, died in 1994 from problems connected to AIDS while working on his final project; in numerous sequences, he addresses the camera from his hospital bed. The film discusses sexism and homophobia within the black community by juxtaposing excerpts of misogynistic and anti-gay slurs from famous hip-hop songs with interviews with African-American intellectuals and political theorists, such as Cornel West, bell hooks, and Angela Davis.
