Burden of Dreams

Werner Herzog, a German director, begins work on his 1982 epic "Fitzcarraldo" but quickly encounters major difficulties, ranging from casting issues to his own adamant reluctance to employ special effects. His crew must then drag an old-fashioned riverboat over a mountain using only manpower after having to reshoot much of the film due to the lead actor's recasting. Herzog fights to achieve his vision with a zeal that borders on lunacy, pledging to see the picture through to completion, even if it means his demise.
