Sayonara

Air Force Major Lloyd Gruver (Marlon Brando) is reassigned into a Japanese airbase, also is faced with US racial prejudice against the Japanese folks. Because some of those soldiers become romantically involved in defiance of US policy, Japanese women, the matter is compounded. Ordinarily an officer who is by the book, Gruver must take a position when a friend of his, an enlisted man Joe Kelly (Red Buttons) falls deeply in love with a Japanese woman Katsumi (Miyoshi Umeki) and marries her. Gruver risks his position by serving as best man.
