Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors

Ivan falls in love with Marichka, the daughter of his father's killer, in a Carpathian village. When tragedy strikes her, he grieves for months before resuming his colorful life and marrying Palagna. She wants children, but he can't get his mind off of his long-lost love. Palagna tries sorcery to reclaim his attention, and in the process falls under the sorcerer's control, publicly humiliating Ivan, who subsequently battles the sorcerer. The vibrant rhythms of village life, work and holidays, the pageantry and festivity of weddings and funerals, the changing seasons, and nature's beauty all contribute to the tragedy of Ivan.
