The New Archies
The Archie comic books and characters have been used as the inspiration for a long-running children's television animation called "The New Archies." Archie Andrews, Betty Cooper, Veronica Lodge, Jughead Jones, and Reggie Mantle, along with the other teenage students of Riverdale High School, were re-imagined in the series as pre-teens attending junior high school. The series was created by DIC Entertainment and initially aired on NBC. There were a total of fourteen episodes made for the show, all of which were broadcast during the show's first and only season in 1987 and were rerun the following year in 1989. Alongside the animated series, a brief-lived comic book series based on the same characters and taking place in the same universe was also published by Archie Comics. Reruns of the show were broadcast on The Family Channel's Saturday morning schedule between the years 1991 and 1993, and then again on Toon Disney between the years 1998 and 2002. Veronica, the main character of this series, has a very valley girl accent. However, in earlier animated cartoons and episodes of the radio show, she spoke with a thick accent from the south. Eugene, an African American character, took up the role of "intellectual" that had previously been played by Dilton Doiley. Amani, who is Eugene's girlfriend, was also brought on board as a cast member. In addition to that, Archie got a dog named Red.
