In the past, mining operations in Chiatura, located in western Georgia, were responsible for producing up to half of the world's manganese, which is an essential metal utilized everywhere. It looks very much like a post-apocalyptic ghost town right now. Mzis Qalaqi represents a handful of the people who are still living in the area. Zurab, a music instructor, earns extra money on the side by dismantling run-down concrete buildings and selling the iron girders that he finds inside of them. Archil is required to continue working in the mine, but his true interest lies with the neighborhood theater company. Two teenage female athletes continue to train bravely for the upcoming Olympic Games despite the fact that they are severely undernourished.
