Fortune Favors Lady Nikuko
Nikuko is an outspoken, happy, scattered, and passionate woman who lives in an otherwise quiet seaside town in northern Japan. She is also the single mother of Kikuko, who is 11 and very different from her in many ways. Kikuko is a small girl who is quiet, thoughtful, and methodical about how she lives in this small harbor town. Kikuko's mom, Nikuko, embarrasses her, but Nikuko's boldness makes her especially well-known in a town where Kikuko wants nothing more than to blend in. As Kikuko deals with the everyday social dramas of middle school, she adds touches of magical realism from her always-present imagination. At the same time, a shocking secret from the past threatens to tear the pair's close relationship apart.
