The Papaya Sisters, a getai group that performs during the seventh lunar month, is formed by two Singaporean girls. Little Papaya is an orphan with terminal cancer, while Big Papaya is separated from her mother, who disapproves of her performances. Auntie Ling and her son, Guan Yin, support the two. The two quickly soar to the top of Singapore's getai scene, singing traditional Hokkien melodies, but their success earns them the animosity of the Durian Sisters, a competing group of Eurasian females who sing techno.
