Brasilia, Contradictions of a New City
In 1967, de Andrade was welcomed by the Italian firm Olivetti to generate a documentary on the new Brazilian capital city of Brasília. Constructed throughout the last fifty percent of the 1950s and also founded in 1960, the city became part of an effort to inhabit Brazil's large interior area and also was to be the personification of democratic urban planning, without the class departments and inequalities that define many metropolises. Unsurprisingly, Brasília, Contradições de uma Cidade Nova (Brasília, Oppositions of a New City, 1968) exposed Brasília to be utopic just for the affluent, duplicating the very same social issues present in every Brazilian city.
