Royal Opera House: Madama Butterfly

Cio-Cio-San, the young Japanese bride of dashing American officer Lieutenant Pinkerton, finds her romantic paradise destroyed when he abandons her soon after their wedding. She holds out hope that he will return one day. Cio-Cio-San and her young boy come across Pinkerton's ship in the harbour three years later. Pinkerton and his American wife Kate have arrived to take the boy away and raise him in America, something she is looking forward to. Cio-Cio-San says goodbye to her kid before killing herself.
