Safety to Nome
Every February, four dozen athletes are flown to Alaska to go on a trip that will test their bodies and minds, as well as their wills to achieve and live. The Iditarod Trail Invitational is the world's longest, roughest, and most remote ultra marathon, requiring racers to bike, walk, or ski 1000 kilometers across the Alaskan tundra. More individuals have climbed Everest in an afternoon than have cycled from Anchorage to Nome. This year, however, twenty-six racers will attempt to complete the entire 1000-mile Iditarod Trail. 12 days is the quickest time ever recorded. The longest is almost 30 feet. The unknowns are what draw these great athletes to this event year after year in quest of meaning and excitement, but it is also the unknowns that make it one of the most dangerous on the planet. How eager are you to give up your toes, hands, or a loved one? On the Iditarod Trail, this is what happens if you aren't prepared.
