Jack Roosevelt Robinson came from humble beginnings to become one of America's most revered individuals after crossing the color barrier in baseball. Robinson, a staunch integrationist, utilized his enormous celebrity to speak out against prejudice on and off the field, enraging fans, the press, and even teammates who had formerly praised him for "turning the other cheek." After baseball, he became a widely read newspaper writer, contentious political activist, and persistent supporter for civil rights, but as diabetes weakened his body and a new generation of leaders established a more aggressive course for the civil rights movement, he battled to stay relevant.
